Indie Music Bus has always worked best when music discovery feels personal.
Not a stream of anonymous recommendations. Not a contest to see who already has the biggest audience. Not another place where artists are expected to pay for attention.
I mean the kind of discovery that happens when someone who genuinely listens says, “You need to hear this artist, and here is why.”
That idea is at the center of something new on Indie Music Bus: the Ethereal Label Society, or ELS.
ELS is now in Live Beta. I am inviting thoughtful music fans to create some of the first Ethereal Labels, introduce independent artists they believe in, and help shape how this new part of the site develops.
I especially want to hear from people who love discovering music without making it themselves. Listeners, collectors, bloggers, DJs, and local-scene supporters are the heart of this idea. You do not need to be an artist or work in the music business to have something valuable to share.
What is an Ethereal Label?
An Ethereal Label is a fan-curated virtual record label inside Indie Music Bus.
It gives a curator a public place to bring together independent artists who share a feeling, perspective, sound, or creative connection. Each label has its own name, logo, color theme, social links, and a concise statement explaining the curator’s point of view.
The curator chooses 3 to 10 different artists, with one current release entry per artist, and places them in a deliberate order. That list can be published in either of two ways:
- An ordered roster presents the artists without public rank numbers.
- A ranked chart presents the same kind of list as the curator’s current ranking.
A curator does not have to use ranked charts. An ordered roster remains public, discoverable, and eligible to supply an artist to the sitewide Master Chart.
An Ethereal Label is not a legal record label. It does not sign, own, manage, publish, distribute, or represent the artists it features. It is a public identity for music discovery and curation.
What can a Society curator create?
An approved curator receives a restricted account and works through a private front-end Ethereal Label Studio. It is not a WordPress administrator account.
From the Studio, a curator can:
- Name and describe one Ethereal Label.
- Choose an approved color theme and upload a label logo.
- Add supported public social profiles.
- Choose whether the label accepts artist requests.
- Build and reorder a list of 3 to 10 independent artists.
- Publish the list as an ordered roster or ranked chart.
- Link each artist to a direct Bandcamp release or Spotify track.
- Add a concise artist description and supported artist social links for the label page.
- Submit the label and later roster or chart editions for review.
- Read incoming artist requests privately in the Studio.
Published editions remain part of the label’s history. A curator can prepare a new version without silently rewriting what visitors saw before.
Nonexclusive and exclusive participation
ELS supports two participation styles.
A nonexclusive label is selected directly by its curator. An artist does not need an ELS account to appear on that label, and the artist can use the permanent correction or removal route if something is wrong.
An exclusive-participation label uses a private invitation and approval process. The artist must create or sign into the matching restricted account, confirm access to the supplied email address, accept the ELS participation terms, and approve participation before joining the label.
Exclusive participation applies only inside ELS. It does not change anyone’s music rights, management, ownership, representation, or real-world relationships. An artist may leave through the protected departure process.
If you simply want to curate and recommend artists, the nonexclusive option is the easier place to begin.
How artist requests work
A curator may choose whether the public label page accepts artist requests.
When requests are enabled, a nonexclusive label offers Request Chart Consideration and an exclusive-participation label offers Request to Join This Label. The artist supplies a name, contact email, release title, and direct Bandcamp or Spotify link.
That request is stored privately in the owning curator’s Studio inbox. Email is only an additional notification, so the request remains available if an email does not arrive. The curator may review it, reply using email if interested, or dismiss it when the pending contact record is no longer needed.
Sending a request does not create an account, add an artist to a roster, guarantee a response, promise chart placement, or influence any other Indie Music Bus editorial decision.
How the Master Chart works
When at least three eligible labels are active, Indie Music Bus can open a seven-day Master Chart cycle.
ELS makes one weighted selection from each label’s current ordered artist list. Artists nearer the top have a better chance of representing the label, but every listed artist has a chance. The selection is made once when the cycle opens and remains fixed for the entire cycle. Refreshing the page or changing a roster later cannot reroll it.
Listeners then choose among those selected artists through the accessible deliberate HOLD voting interaction. A separate timed option is available for people who cannot use a continuous hold.
At least 10 valid votes are required for an official result. ELS does not use Spotify popularity, Bandcamp sales, follower counts, paid placement, or Indie Music Bus editorial coverage to determine the ranking.
Why call this a Live Beta?
The working system is in place: curator applications, private label creation, review, public discovery, roster and chart history, Bandcamp and Spotify listening, artist requests, corrections, accessible Master Chart voting, and the private workflows needed to protect each role.
Live Beta means the first real curators and visitors will help show how the Society feels in regular use.
I can test whether a form saves correctly. I can simulate rosters, requests, reviews, and voting cycles. I cannot simulate someone’s musical instincts or predict which parts of the experience will matter most to real curators and artists.
That is where the first participants come in.
Who should apply?
You may be a good Society curator if you:
- Regularly discover independent music and tell other people about it.
- Have a recognizable point of view without needing to stay inside one genre.
- Can explain why an artist belongs on your label.
- Are willing to keep a small artist roster thoughtful and current.
- Respect artists and understand that curation is not ownership or representation.
- Do not expect payment, favoritism, or guaranteed Indie Music Bus coverage.
You do not need music-industry credentials or a large following. This is for music fans with a point of view. A small, carefully chosen roster is more interesting than a large list assembled without attention.
Artists may apply too, but ELS is not intended to be a personal catalog disguised as independent curation. A label may include no more than one artist that its curator performs as or with, manages, represents, or financially benefits from. That relationship must be declared and is shown publicly on the label page. Ten songs by the same artist do not count as ten artists. The rest of the roster must reflect genuine independent curation.
Putting your own artist first cannot guarantee a Master Chart place or a win. Higher roster positions improve selection odds, but ELS still makes a weighted draw and listeners determine the result. A three-artist roster is allowed; filling the other places merely to improve your own promotional odds is not the spirit of the Society. Relationship declarations are reviewed by people, not automatically verified by software.
One person may operate only one Ethereal Label. Applications are reviewed before an account is created. Email confirmation proves control of the supplied email address only. It does not verify legal identity, authority to represent an artist, or ownership of a Bandcamp or Spotify account.
Questions, concerns, and criticism are welcome
You do not have to apply for a label to help with the Live Beta.
If something feels unclear, unfair, too complicated, or open to abuse, I want to hear that. I am especially interested in concerns about artist treatment, the one-person and one-label rule, exclusive participation, weighted selection, listener voting, privacy, accessibility, and the distinction between curation and representation.
Thoughtful criticism is useful. The purpose of a Live Beta is not merely to prove that the software runs. It is to learn whether the rules and experience make sense to the people who may actually use them.

The application asks for a requested username, public curator name, email address, and a short explanation of why you want to curate an Ethereal Label. You confirm access to the email address, I review the application, and an approved curator receives the normal WordPress password setup message.
Approval gives you access to create one private label draft. It does not automatically publish a label, guarantee promotion, or influence another Indie Music Bus editorial decision.
